Mary-Kate Olsen Biography

Mary-Kate has always been close to her twin sister Ashley. In fact, when the site needs a biography for Ashley I may just remove this line and switch the names around (and I am not kidding). The two were born in Sherman Oaks, California on 13th June, 1986.

From the start it was clear they were destined for big things - after all, they were born in the same year as myself. Their parents were David and Jarnette Olsen. Mary-Kate is technically younger than her sister, arriving two minutes later.

Only a year after they were born their acting careers began after Jarnette was persuaded to take them along to an audition when they were chosen to play Michelle Tanner in the sitcom series Full House. The show was very popular running from 1987 to 1995 and gave the twins the second highest TVQ popularity rating only being topped by Bill Cosby.

As a trivia point, both Mary-Kate and her sister played the part of Michelle to get round those pesky child labor laws. They were given the part due to their skills of not crying. And that's pretty good - I know people that haven't mastered that at 26.

During her time on Full House, Mary-Kate also did some family movies which were direct-to-video releases. Of course this didn't do much for her fame as, as Lion King II proved, nobody watches direct-to-video films.

After Full House, the twins got themselves a record deal and recorded the album, Brother of Sale. The success of the album led the way for another five albums. They also made several video series including the adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley. By this time it was 1995, and the two were about to make their big screen debut in "It Takes Two."

Though it failed to do well in cinemas, the movie took $75 million when it was made available on VHS, $1.6 million going to Mary-Kate and her sister. After the results from this they continued to make direct-to-video movies as well as some merchandise - video games, school bags, etc. Personally I remember commercials for Mary-Kate and Ashley's mystery mall in Gameboy. They were simpler times.

In 1993 parents Jarnette and David spilt up although stayed in firm control of the twins finance. Although of course in 2004 the girls turned 18 and took control of their empire. Their 18th birthday also clocked up quite a few shall we say, lads websites, counting down the days until, well I'll leave you to figure that one out ;).

Back on the acting side of things, in 1998 the two starred in Two of a Kind and then in 2001, So Little Time. I liked So Little Time myself but both series were cancelled after the first series. In 2004 Mary-Kate co-produced and starred in New York Minute.

In summer 2004, Mary-Kate went through some hard times with an eating disorder and spent 6 weeks in a rehabilitation clinic. Thanks to support from her sister Ashley though she recovered in time for the two to begin their freshman year at New York University.
